Pathfinder Foundation and the Asia New Zealand Foundation Dialogue – 2023 August
The inaugural Dialogue between the Pathfinder Foundation and the Asia New Zealand Foundation held in Colombo marked a significant step towards more profound understanding and collaboration between Sri Lanka and New Zealand, with broader implications for small states in the Asia Pacific region. Against the backdrop of heightened interest of major regional powers, the Dialogue addressed the multifaceted challenges small states face in navigating the rapidly shifting geopolitical dynamics.
Themes ranging from Indo-Pacific strategic security to domestic policy reforms and bilateral ties with global powers were explored, reflecting both nations' shared interests and concerns. Participants from both foundations, including esteemed academics and experts, contributed valuable insights and perspectives during the discussions.
Bernard Goonetilleke, Chairman of the Pathfinder Foundation, and Prof. David Capie of Victoria University set the tone for the dialogue with opening remarks, underscoring the importance of constructive engagement and cooperation. Sessions were alternately chaired by Ahmed A. Jawad of the Pathfinder Foundation and Prof. David Capie, fostering a balanced exchange of ideas.
The presence of Michael Appleton, the High Commissioner for New Zealand, added prestige to the occasion, highlighting the significance of the dialogue in strengthening bilateral ties.
