The Second Dialogue with Diplomats – 2023, August
The Pathfinder Foundation recently convened an insightful intellectual dialogue titled "Dialogue with the Diplomatic Corps" in Colombo, bringing together members of the diplomatic community stationed in Sri Lanka. The Dialogue focused on the timing of the local government and presidential elections in Sri Lanka and their far-reaching implications on society and the economy, reflecting its contemporary significance in the political discourse.
Renowned academic Prof. Rohan Samarajiva, Founding Chairperson of LIRNasia, led the discussion, offering historical insights into Sri Lanka's electoral processes and their societal impacts while drawing parallels with current dynamics. Prof. Sirimal Abeyaratne, former Head of the Economics Department at the University of Colombo, served as the discussant, shedding light on how the country's political landscape has influenced its economic trajectory, particularly amidst recent crises.
The dialogue provided a platform for lively exchanges and discussions, with participants engaging in a robust exploration of the subject matter. Profound questions posed by the diplomatic community added depth to the discourse, offering fresh perspectives on local political processes.
Beyond its academic significance, the dialogue also facilitated networking opportunities among diplomats based in Colombo, fostering greater understanding and collaboration.
This event marks the continuation of the Pathfinder Foundation's efforts to engage with the diplomatic community on pertinent issues. Following the success of the inaugural Dialogue in 2022, which focused on State Owned Enterprises, the Foundation plans to sustain this dialogue series, exploring various topics of interest to diplomats regularly.
